Update #39: The Book of Lore is here in print!

Your hands trace across the top of the desk—Bluebeard’s own, you imagine. It smells like it would be his, a rich, thick, masculine scent. It feels like his—smooth, but with patches of rough wood grain. You can just see him sitting at the desk, his fingers wrapped around one of the quill pens on the corner. In your mind’s eye, he scribes his name on an important document with large swoops of ink. You wonder if you could see such a document...if he holds any within the desk drawers.
You slide open the draw directly below the desktop, and find inside an ancient looking book, far older than even this building. The leather is almost black, and cracked with age. You tenderly remove it and lay it upon the desk, lifting the cover.
“Herein lie my thoughts, my beliefs, my memories, my essence,” say the words on the first page, written in that same looping script you saw in your head. “He or she who reads them sees me for who I am.”
At last! Truly, you could not have had better luck! His journal! His deepest self expressed by his own hand!
You eagerly flip the page, your hungry eyes raking the yellowed paper for more text...but you find only a single word: “WIFE”
You flip to the next page. “YOU” flip “SHOULD” flip “NOT” flip “BE” flip “READING” flip
And there, on the next page, a perfectly inked sketch of you, wearing your wedding dress, sitting at a masculine writing desk, flipping through a book...while a dark silhouette looms over you from behind.
Getting Your Copy of the Book of Lore
If you pledged for a print copy of the Book of Lore through the Kickstarter, then you should receive a Backerkit update with the coupon code for you to order your copy.
Then check your digital downloads to look for the Book of Lore coupon code. That download will also include a link to the page where you can find the Book of Lore.
Go there and add the Book of Lore to your cart. Then, when you check out, use the coupon code in the coupons area and apply it. The coupon code will discount the book fully, and give you the option to check “free shipping”. Make sure you do! Fully check out, and then you’re all set!

Since we’re shipping out the books soon, it means that some orders might not arrive before GenCon. If you are coming to GenCon, then you can let us know if you’d like to pick up your copy there, instead of having us ship it out to you.
Just fill out the form linked below and we’ll make sure we have a copy of the Book of Lore ready for you at the Magpie Games booth (#2459) at GenCon! Make sure to fill it out by Sunday, July 29th, 7pm EST so we have it ready for you to pick up.

There, ensconced within its own alabaster altar, is a set of books. The blue leather is supple beneath your fingertips, the pages a creamy white as you open it up. The words are written in a flowing, perfect script:
“...She walked to the bookcase, called by some urge she could not name. The books were bound in blue leather—what creature could have provided that, she wondered? Likely some foreign beast her husband had slain. As she opened the first book, her eyes met words scrawled in her husband’s perfect hand:
‘...She swept through the room, straight to the bookcase. She couldn’t go anywhere else, not to look at the screaming portraits upon the wall, or to examine the strange stain she barely noticed upon the white stone floor. She could only pick up the blue leather-bound book, practically tearing open the cover, and setting her eyes into the words she found there:
“...She opened the book and found her own story. And she had to read:
‘...She was trapped, and deservedly so, framed in framing devices and slave to the words that surrounded her, and she belonged to me. Only to me. Read on, wife:
“YOU. BELONG. TO. ME.”’”’”

Public Release
We'll be releasing the game to the full public a bit later, so if you didn't back for a copy, stay tuned—we'll have the PDF up on DriveThruRPG soon, and physical copies available in our webstore after that!
Next Steps
In the meantime, we’re working on the Deck of Objects and Tarot of Servants. We’re getting into the print-proofing process for those items now, so they’re not long away! We’re really excited about how good they look, and we can’t wait for them to adorn your table, in all their horrific glory.
Additionally, we’re doing internal playtesting on all of the Book of Mirrors playsets. This book is going to point at some interesting new themes for Bluebeard’s Bride, and the design of the book will guarantee that using each new playset is easy as can be—with every chapter being ready to print and use at your table.

Feather quills and scrolls decorate this door, the tiniest of details carved into glossy wood. You squint at the letters peeking from the wooden pages, but it all blurs as your fingers click automatically through the ring of keys. One pen seems to be in the process of engraving love poetry into the nearest scroll, but a second glance shows the intricate lines of an anatomical drawing of the muscles of a woman’s torso. Another page looks to be an artist’s sketchbook with a drawing of a woman screaming, but you blink and it seems now a study of a newly blooming rose...
You select a miniature quill from the keyring, the nib fitting perfectly into the keyhole, the downy barbs brushing your wrist, and turn the key. The door opens...

You dip your fingers in the corpse’s blood and smear them in straight lines upon your white dress. You don’t know why you didn’t think of this sooner—arming yourself against the nightmare of this manor with a map! You have nothing with which to write, save the blood of this poor servant. You have nothing to write upon, save your own pristine white dress. But you are determined now—you will triumph. Your fingers trace along one seam—the hallway you just walked through—then you take a curve at your knee to run down your calf—this is where you are now, seated on the carpet before the door made of insect carapace.
Finally, you are making headway—making sense of this horror, sorting it out, resolving it. You look up with a smile...
And then you realize that the hall around you has changed. Where stood the walls of white plaster, now you find black marble. Where the insect carapace door loomed with jagged edges, now there is a door swathed in red velvet. Where the servant’s corpse had lain, pouring blood out into the carpet, now there is only a sculpture of a crane.
Where you had drawn the map upon your wedding dress, you see only faces, screaming at you from within lines of blood. Soon your voice joins them.

The walls are lined with black frames, the wood shot through with veins of red. They’re packed so tight, you can’t even see the plaster beneath. Only the images trapped beneath the panes of glass. Each one is a surreal horror made just for you. A bespectacled man eats fish while blood red wine stains his table. A screaming bride is engulfed in flames from a candelabra while shadowed faces look on coldly. An old man is pierced nine times by sharpened wands. You look into their depths and they reach up to swallow you, shadows and crimson surrounding your heart and mind until you cannot breathe.
You race down the hall, hoping to reach the end, to find some blank wall free of these leering illustrations, but you find none. The hall stretches on, and on, and on. Your feet give way, and you collapse to the carpet as the framed images close on you. You barely let out a sound as you are swallowed up by nightmare.
The Deck of Objects & Tarot of Servants are here!
Arriving in a wave of phantasmagoria, we received BOTH the Deck of Objects and the Tarot of Servants in PDF form! We’ve already pushed out codes via Backerkit, so backers who backed at the $20 Garden level or above should have something new in their downloads section on Backerkit: two new PDFs!
Neither of these PDFs are in their absolutely final version, but they are complete versions of both the Deck of Objects and the Tarot of Servants.
